Pitocin is used to jumpstart or strengthen labor. When used, contractions often become stronger, longer and closer together.
It is a synthetic drug which mimics the naturally occuring labor hormone oxytocin. Unlike oxytocin, pitocin does not pass the brain barrier and therefore does not provide the same euphoric experiences at birth as does oxytocin.
